How to appoint or change an attorney for property

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Your attorney for property is the person you authorize to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf if you become mentally incapable of doing so. You can appoint a single attorney and backup attorneys in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to act. You cannot appoint co-attorneys for property.

Steps to appoint or change an attorney for property

Step 1: Open the Property Attorneys page and log into your Willful account

Step 2: Edit attorney details

You will be prompted to choose your attorney setup. Your attorney for property can be any trusted person who is willing and able to mange financial matters. Many married people choose their spouse, but it is also often another family member like an adult child, close friend, or professional advisor.

  • If you are changing an existing attorney, you may select an existing contact or click on Add new to assign a new contact to this role.

Step 3: Add backup attorney(s)

You can appoint backup attorney(s) to act if your first choice can't serve.

  • Click Add Attorney to set backups.

Reminder: Download print, and sign your updated will for the changes to be legally valid.
