How to download and/or print your legal documents

Updated over 2 weeks ago

After you complete and finalize your Willful plan, it's important to download, print, and sign your documents (or download and digitally sign them if you're in British Columbia) in order for them to become legally valid.

Here's an overview of how to access your documents, download them as PDFs, and prepare them for printing or digital signing, along with what to expect in the download file.

Prefer not to print it yourself? Willful offers a paid, optional Print & Ship service to have your documents professionally printed and mailed to you. Get Print & Ship →

Accessing your documents

To download or print your Willful documents, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Willful account.

  2. Once logged in, click on the Menu option in the top blue bar.

  3. From the drop-down menu, select Documents.

  4. Click the View/Download button next to the document you want. It will open in a new tab, where you can either print directly from your browser or click the download icon to save it to your device.

Note: If you did not purchase one of our Premium Packages, you will only see your last will and testament available for download or viewing. If you have the Premium plan, each of the three documents will have its own View/Download button.

What’s included in the download

Your download will include:

  • Your document (Will, Power of Attorney, etc.)

  • An instruction page (usually the first one or two pages) to help make your documents legally valid

Printing your documents

Willful is a digital platform that helps you create your estate planning documents. After creating them, you’ll need to either print the PDF documents and sign them with your witnesses, or - if you're in British Columbia - download and sign them digitally, following the included instructions.

We don’t offer a printing and shipping service at this time. If you don’t have a printer, we recommend:

  • Downloading your documents and emailing them to a friend or family member who can print them for you

  • Using a local printing and shipping service, such as your nearest public library, Staples, UPS Store, or a local print shop. Many libraries offer low-cost or free printing services, and commercial options like Staples and UPS often have walk-in print and copy centers that can handle PDF documents directly from a USB drive or email.

Printing tips:

  • Use letter-size paper (8.5 x 11 inches)

  • Print single-sided only

  • Make sure all pages are included, especially signing pages. The instruction page is helpful for guiding the signing process but it does not form part of the legal document.

  • Keep printed documents neat and unmarked until you and your witnesses are ready to sign.

Troubleshooting printing issues

If you downloaded your documents prior to June of 2025, you might encounter a font-related error message or improper formatting when printing.

To resolve this, try printing your documents as images:

  1. Open your document in Adobe Acrobat Reader:

    • Locate your document on your PC, right-click it, and choose Open with > Adobe Acrobat DC.

    • If you don’t have Adobe Reader installed, you can download it for free here.

  2. Access the print dialog:

    • In Acrobat, click File in the top-left corner and select Print.

    • Or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Cmd+P on a Mac.

  3. Enable "Print As Image":

    • In the print dialog, click Advanced.

    • Check the box for Print As Image and click OK.

  4. Print your document:

    • Close the advanced setup window and click Print.

FAQs

Can I re-download documents if I make changes?

Yes. If you update your documents, the most recent version will be available for download in your account.

Is a digital copy valid?

In most provinces, no. To make your documents legally valid, you must print and follow the included signing instructions. However, in British Columbia, Bill 21 allows residents to sign and witness their will document digitally. The other two documents—Power of Attorney and Representation Agreement—must still be printed and signed on paper.
