How to assign or change a guardian for your pets

Updated over 2 weeks ago

You can name a trusted person to care for your pets after you pass by assigning a pet guardian in your Willful account. While this step is optional, it ensures your pets will be looked after according to your wishes.

Willful wills account for all pets you own at the time of your passing - even those not specifically named in your will. This means if you have a new pet later but don't update your will, they will still be covered.

Steps to assign or change a pet guardian

Step 1: Open the pet guardian page and log into your Willful account

Step 2: Assign a pet guardian

  1. Select a guardian from your saved contacts using the drop-down menu.

    • To add a new contact, scroll to the bottom and select Add new.

    • You must assign at least one guardian. This guardian will be responsible for all of your pets - Willful does not currently allow different guardians for each pet.

  2. Optional: Add the spouse of your chosen guardian as a co-guardian.

  3. Add backup guardian(s) by clicking Add more guardians at the bottom of the page

Step 3: Allocate funds for pet care on the pet trust page

  1. Choose the amount of money from your estate you wish to leave to your pet guardian(s) to help with care expenses.

  2. The pet trust is optional - if you do not want to leave funds, select No pet trust.

  3. Click Continue to save your changes.

Reminder: Don't forget to download and/or print, then sign and witness your updated will for the changes to be legally valid.
