Understanding and registering your will

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Once your will is signed and witnessed, you might wonder - how will my loved ones find it when the time comes?

Registering your will is an optional step, but it helps ensure your executor and family can locate the most up-to-date version when it matters most. Registering doesn’t mean uploading the full document or making your personal details public. Instead, it means recording key information so it can be found if needed. This simple step helps your executor avoid confusion or delays during an already difficult time.

At Willful, we offer a built-in registration feature that makes it easy to manage your will details. It's included in all paid plans with no additional fees, carries the same value as registering with the Canada Will Registry, and you’ll have the flexibility to keep your will registration up to date - without starting from scratch.

What information from my will is registered?

When you register your will through Willful, you’ll be asked to enter:

  • Date of execution - The day your will was signed and witnessed

  • Witness information - The names and contact details of your two witnesses

  • Storage location - Where your signed, original will is being kept

👉 You don’t need to upload a copy of your will - just provide the key details needed to locate it. Willful does not store any completed documents for you, and it is your responsibility to keep it at a safe location.

Registering your will on Willful

  1. Open the Registration page and log into your Willful account

  2. Enter the details and click Complete registration.

Once done, your registration will be securely saved in your account. You can update your registration anytime. Just keep in mind that if you make any edits to your will, you’ll need to sign and witness your document(s) again to make the new version legally valid.

Other registration options

The only provincial government that has its own registry is British Columbia. Learn more about the BC Vital Statistics Electronic Wills System on their website.

Willful includes a one-time registration code for Canada Will Registry, a nation-wide registry. However, if you need to update the registration in the future there would be additional fees. Learn more about how to register with the Canada Will Registry.
