How to assign or change a guardian for your minor children

Updated over 2 weeks ago

You can name a trusted person to care for your children in the event that both parents or legal guardians pass away. While appointing a guardian is not legally required, it is an important step to ensure your children are cared for according to your wishes.

Steps to assign or change a guardian for minor children

Step 1: Open the guardians page and log into your Willful account

Step 2: Assign a guardian

If any of your children are minors, Willful will prompt you to assign a guardian.

  1. Choose a primary guardian:

    • From the drop-down list, select a guardian from your saved contacts.

    • To add a new contact, scroll to the bottom of the list and click +Add new.

    • Note: You cannot appoint your spouse as a guardian, since guardianship only applies if both parents or legal guardians have passed away.

  2. Add backup guardians:

    • Click Add more guardians at the bottom of the page to name secondary or tertiary guardians.

    • We strongly recommend adding backups in case your first choice is unable to serve.

  3. Optional: Include the spouses of your chosen guardians.

Reminder: Don't forget to download and/or print, then sign and witness your updated will for the changes to be legally valid.
