How to manage contacts in your Willful account

Updated over 2 weeks ago

When you add someone to your will or power of attorney documents - such as an executor, beneficiary, or guardian - they are saved in your contacts list for easy reuse.

This simplifies the process of appointing individuals to specific roles, correcting errors, and avoiding common mistakes (e.g., appointing someone to a role they are not eligible for, such as assigning guardianship of a minor child to a spouse).

You can edit, remove, or add new contacts anytime. If a contact’s details change or you’ve accidentally added duplicates (for example, a misspelled name, or if someone has changed their name), you can update them so your documents are clear and accurate.

The contacts page is only available after payment. If you have not paid yet and you're trying to update a contact, please do so directly in the section(s) of your will where that person is assigned.

Updating an existing contact

  • Log into your Willful account and open your Contacts page.

  • Find the contact you want to update and edit their details.

  • If you have multiple entries for the same person, give one a unique identifier so you can easily tell them apart during reassignment.

    • For example: If “John Doe” appears several times, rename one to “John Doe X” before reassigning their roles.

Reassigning a role to a different contact

  • If you’ve renamed or updated a contact, visit the section(s) of your will where that person is assigned.

    • For example: Guardians are in Step 2 – Your Family, executors are in Step 4 – Your Arrangements, and beneficiaries are in Step 3 – Your Estate.

  • Update the role to point to the correct contact from your list.

  • If you need help, see our related tutorials for assigning executors, guardians, and beneficiaries.

Removing contacts

  • Go to your Contacts page.

  • Check if the contact you want to remove is currently assigned to any roles. You'll encounter an error message when trying to delete them if this is the case. Assign a different contact for that role before proceeding.

  • Return to the Contacts page and select Manage My Contacts.

  • Click Remove next to the contact you want to delete.

Adding a new contact

  • You can add a new person directly from while filling in any section of your will.

  • Once saved, the contact will be available anywhere you need to assign a role in your documents.

Reminder: Any change to a contact that is assigned in your will requires you to download and/or print, and sign your updated documents for the changes to be legally valid.
